Paperstone's Guide to Coffee

Types of packaging, and what might be best for you

Whole Beans Great if you have a grinder and bean-to-cup machine. Freshest flavour and aroma, perfect for offices that want to impress staff or clients with barista-style coffee.
Ground coffee Ready to brew without grinding. Works well with filter machines or cafetières; a balance between quality and convenience.
Instant Coffee Quick, easy, and cost-effective. Just add hot water. A convenient option for busy offices/canteens where speed matters most.
Pods & Capsules Consistent taste and minimal mess. Great for smaller offices or meeting rooms where variety and convenience are key. We stock a full range of Nespresso, Dolce Gusto & Tassimo pods.
Vending Bags Designed for coffee vending machines. Low-maintenance, bulk supply that keeps large teams fuelled without constant restocking.

How can I keep sustainability in mind when buying coffee?

Ethical Sourcing

Look for certifications like Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance - these ensure farmers are paid fairly and coffee is grown responsibly.

Eco-friendly packaging

Opt for recyclable, compostable, or bulk packaging to cut down on waste.

Pods with a plan

If you use coffee pods, choose recyclable or compostable options, and make sure staff know how to dispose of them properly.

Minimise waste

Buy the right format for your office size. For example, beans for high-use machines, or instant for occasional drinkers, so nothing goes stale.

Fancy learning a little more?

Coffee’s origins are traced back to around AD 850, when an Ethiopian or Arab goatherd named Kaldi noticed the energising effects of coffee plants. From the Arab world, coffee spread quickly despite initial bans, becoming central to Islamic culture and later reaching Europe in the 16th–17th centuries, where coffee-houses flourished as hubs of politics, culture, and business.

Originally grown only in Yemen, coffee cultivation expanded to Java and then the Americas by the 18th century, with Brazil emerging as a dominant producer. The 19th and 20th centuries saw advances in roasting, grinding, vacuum sealing, and eventually instant coffee.

Fun fact: Coffee-houses in England were seen as places of equality and free debate - so much so that Charles II attempted to shut them down.
