Coffee’s origins are traced back to around AD 850, when an Ethiopian or Arab goatherd named Kaldi noticed the energising effects of coffee plants. From the Arab world, coffee spread quickly despite initial bans, becoming central to Islamic culture and later reaching Europe in the 16th–17th centuries, where coffee-houses flourished as hubs of politics, culture, and business.

Originally grown only in Yemen, coffee cultivation expanded to Java and then the Americas by the 18th century, with Brazil emerging as a dominant producer. The 19th and 20th centuries saw advances in roasting, grinding, vacuum sealing, and eventually instant coffee.

Fun fact: Coffee-houses in England were seen as places of equality and free debate - so much so that Charles II attempted to shut them down.
