An index card is card cut to a standard size used for recording individual items of information that can then be easily filed and rearranged. They were first used widely in the indexing- and taxonomy-mad Age of Victoria. Before the ubiquity of computer cataloguing, libraries indexed their collections with index cards.

• 5x3in or 127x76mm. Perhaps the most common, you may have used these to write revision notes on for GCSEs if you were a good boy or girl at school.
• 6x4in or 152x102mm
• 8x5in or 203x127mm
• A7 or 105x74mm (Rolodex only)
