Compasses
A drafting compass is a technical drawing instrument that can be used to draw circles and arcs or simply to mark distances. They can also be used to measure distances on a map. They are thus widely used in geometry, cartography, design and architecture.
Compasses consist of two parts connected by an adjustable hinge. Typically one part – the fastening leg – has a spike at the end while the other is fitted with pencil lead for marking. To draw a circle the fastening leg is secured to the paper with the spike and the compass is rotated with the moving pencil leg tip in contact with the paper. By adjusting the angle between the legs circles of different sizes can be described. The radius of the circle will be the distance between the two compass tips.
Drafting compasses have been used to symbolise precision. The coat of arms of the old German Democratic Republic (East Germany) features a compass.
