Stapler Facts...
- According to hearsay the first stapler was developed in 18th century France exclusively for King Louis XV. Each staple was hand-made and painstakingly inscribed with the royal insignia. However, mere mortals like us had to make do with attaching documents together with needle and thread, red tape and wax until the mid 19th century when the first commercial staplers were manufactured.
- Prior to rows of staples being connected by glue, they were connected by metal and had to attach papers one had to wield a mallet – oh, how far we’ve come!
- The humble stapler starred in the 1999 American comedy film Office Space where the red Swingline stapler, adapted especially for the film, was the prized possession of one of the characters, whose nervous stutter of “I believe that is my stapler” has been enshrined in cartoons, parodies and office banter across America.
- Note also the stapler’s appearance in Ricky Gervais’ TV series The Office, where Gareth’s closely-guarded stapler ends up being set in jelly as a practical joke. Brent’s sage advice is for him to “eat it out”. Tasty.
