Tips to tackle the office spring clean

As the days lengthen and we feel the benefits of more sunlight, our thoughts almost instinctively turn to cleaning and freshening up our surroundings. And this includes our work-spaces.

A clean office is a healthy office. According to the CIPD 2015 Absence Management survey, absenteeism costs businesses in the UK over £14 billion each year. Cleaning your workplace could help prevent the spread of germs (and illness). It also creates the right impression to clients and visitors. People feel happier in a clean environment, and take more pride in where they work.

Why do we spring clean?

Spring is traditionally the time for cleaning for good reason. During the darker winter months our bodies produce more melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep. This is why we feel more tired and lethargic over winter. The longer days that come with spring reduce melatonin production, making us feel more invigorated and spurred into action.

Many cultures have a tradition of spring cleaning. Just before the Persian New Year (Nowruz), which falls on the first day of spring, people participate in ‘khooneh tekouni’ or ‘shaking the house’. The Jewish calendar links spring cleaning with Passover in March or April. In Catholicism the church altar is cleaned the day before Good Friday (in March or April).

Get stuck into cleaning your workplace

Taking on the entire office or work-space can seem daunting, so break the work up in to sections. Below are some ideas for where to start and some Paperstone products that can help with the process!

Your desk

Start by clearing your work-space. Organise and tidy your stationery, have to hand only the items you use regularly. Put everything else together in a drawer or desk tidy. Now de-clutter your paperwork and create useful ‘to do’ and ‘to file’ piles stacked in letter trays.

Make room on a bookshelf or cabinet for files or paper trays. Take old paperwork to the shredder and clear your work surface.  Clean your monitor, wipe your desk keyboard, mouse and telephone.

Tackle the office kitchen

Communal areas can be messy and dirty. You might need to go slightly heavier duty here. Slap on the rubber gloves and use our kitchen cleaner bundle to get stuck into the fridge, microwave and surfaces. A steam mop is a quick and easy way to keep the floor clean. Keep that ‘newly cleaned’ smell by finishing off with an air freshener.
