World Fairtrade Day – 10th May
If you’ve ever seen that little Fairtrade label on your chocolate bar or coffee bag and thought, “Cool, but what exactly does that mean?” – don’t worry. You’re certainly not alone.
What is Fairtrade?
Basically, it’s all about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries.

It’s a global movement that fights against exploitation in supply chains. If you had a banana this morning, and it carried the label, it means the farmer who grew it got a fair price, worked in safe conditions, as well as being part of a co-op or system that supports their community. Good feeling, right?
In short: Fairtrade = people and planet before profit.
There are actually 10 principles behind it, and you can read more about them here:
Our 10 Fair Trade Principles – World Fair Trade Organization
Why does it matter?
You might pay a tiny bit more, but this makes it worth it:
Empowered farmers & workers: They get fair wages. The aim is always to pay a local living wage.
Environmental protection: Fairtrade standards encourage sustainable farming practices that are better for the planet.
Gender equality and non-discrimination: Many programs specifically support women in agriculture with leadership training and financial literacy.
Transparency: You know where your food comes from, and that the people behind it were treated with dignity.

Moreover, it’s not just about being “ethical” – it’s about being human.
