Shredders in History: Iran-Contra
The Iran-Contra affair was a political scandal which emerged in 1986. Then President of the USA Ronald Reagan and senior officials had secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, despite an arms embargo. It was hoped that the arms would secure the release of American hostages held by Iran-influenced Hezbollah. Some of the proceeds from the weapons sale were diverted to anti-Sandinista and anti-communist rebels (Contras) in Nicuragua.
