Cashiers at a bank in Xi’an, Shaanzi province, China were taken aback when a customer turned up with a van load of banknotes. Women started unloading seven big boxes of one yuan notes (worth about 10p each) and bringing them to the counter. The deposit in total was worth about £50,000.

In addition to being amazed, the cashiers were probably a bit annoyed as the notes were old and worn and so had to be counted by hand. Eight cashiers were put to this task but after three hours of slow progress, all hands were called in.
