Office desks ‘dirtier than toilets’

By Paperstone on April 5, 2007 in Office Furniture

Office desks can be up to 400 times dirtier than the average toilet seat, according to recent research.

Even stranger still, the amount of bacteria found on the average woman’s desk was found to be up to three or four times greater than the average man.

Professor Charles Gerba from the University of Arizona, who compiled the research, revealed he was surprised to see men had cleaner desks than their female counterparts.

However, he revealed that women were more likely to interact with children and also keep food in their desks drawers.

And Professor Gerba also put the result of the findings down to cosmetics and skincare products, suggesting they made it easier for bacteria to travel around.

Office desks can be difficult to clean, particularly considering the amount of expensive IT hardware that businesses have.

But help is at hand for office staff out there who find themselves constantly filling their computer keyboards with crumbs and grime.

Unotron manufactures high performance washable keyboards that you can literally run under a tap and clean.

A statement on its website says its products are a "must have for today’s healthcare and education markets".

It says: "Unotron’s patented, washable design transforms the everyday keyboard into an ultra-clean, easy-to-disinfect, user-safe computing accessory."
