Canon wins printer cartridges lawsuit

By Paperstone on November 8, 2007 in Ink Cartridges And Toners

Office supplies manufacturer Canon won a recent lawsuit against a supplier of recycled printer cartridges.

The supreme court in Tokyo did not accept an appeal against a decision in favour of the office equipment firm, which had previously been decided by a lower court, Reuters reports. The original suit alleged that the printer cartridges supplier had infringed Canon’s patents.

According to the news provider, this decision could be significant for firms which rely on the sales of printer cartridges and other printer supplies to bring in a large proportion of their profits.

Canon brought the lawsuit against the printer cartridges supplier Recycle Assist Company in 2004 and requested a court injunction to prevent the firm from importing and selling their branded printer cartridges that had been recycled and re-filled with non-Canon ink.

In other Canon office machines news, this brand of printers was recently revealed to be the most popular choice in the Malaysian office equipment market, the Bernama news agency reported.

Canon product marketing executive of the business imaging solution division in south-east Asia Kenny Tan said that this popularity was a result of the companies strategies regarding packaging and digital printing.
