Running a marathon (and a business) during a global pandemic

In our latest blog post we talk to our CEO & Founder, Jim Brown, about running the London marathon as a non-runner, family man and business owner.

When did you decide to enter?

Initially I was inspired when my wife ran it, but I didn’t think I would be able to. I’ve been trying to stay fit by cycling and going on very occasional 5km runs ever since we had children, nearly 6 years ago.

I’ve always loved cycling but struggled with running. Then I realised if I slowed down a little on shorter runs I could run much, much further. The seed was planted and I entered the ballot.

When did you start training?

Initially January 2020, then COVID happened and I stopped training in April 2020. I started again in June 2021.

Did you create your own training plan or follow one online?

I googled “beginners 16 week marathon guide” – there are loads of plans to choose from. I went for one where I had to complete 3 runs a week.

Equipment, fuel, music recommendations?

Carry your own hydration as it’s so much easier for longer runs. I took on board a gel every 45 mins. On longer runs (and on the big day itself) I found I needed to listen to music with a good baseline to help me push though the exhaustion!

How did you fit running in around work/family life?

Training is definitely a huge commitment. I’m not a morning person – although I did try! Instead I would try and finish work an hour earlier to squeeze a run in and make sure they were blocked out in my calendar as a commitment.

What was it like on the day?

It was an amazing atmosphere. I had a few challenges along the way so was delighted to make the finish line in one piece!

Top running tip!

Run at your pace. If you want to walk, walk. Don’t let other people running by put you off. It’s your race to run however you want.

Anything else you think might be interesting.

Despite all the training I had a tough day… my biggest takeaway is the tip above. On the day listen to your body and you’ll get through.

PS I’ve entered the ballot for 2022 so it can’t have been all that bad. Watch this space!
