National Cherry Day

Eating chocolate at your desk could make you fat – but a bag of juicy cherries can only do you good.

Cherries contain natural chemicals which are good for diabetics and help protect against heart disease and cancer. They help you to sleep, and have pain-relieving and anti-ageing benefits.

National Cherry Day takes place on July 16, so why not hand a bag of this favourite fruit  around the office as a special treat? Just 10 cherries can make up one of your five a day.

The Romans first brought cherries to Britain, but cherry orchards are now declining in the UK. Sadly we now import 95% of all our cherries!

The goal of National Cherry Day is to raise awareness about the need to maintain our traditional orchards!   If everyone eats some home-grown cherries, the future of British cherries will be looking up in no time!

If you like gardening, why not plant your very own cherry tree and you’ll soon have your own supply to snack on – if you can beat the birds to them!
