As mouse mats become increasingly redundant as optical technologies develop, here’s an idea to keep them useful. Scratch-n-Scroll – “The Notable Mousepad” – is a mouse mat that doubles up as a memo pad to take down telephone numbers or messages. No need for a pen, you can jot notes using your finger or a built-in stylus. Like Etch-a-Sketch, you can erase your scribblings by flipping up a semi-transparent top sheet. The Scratch-n-Scroll is available at quirky.com, a US retailer of interesting gizmos, and costs $14.99. (We’re not sure if you can get it in the UK yet).

quirky, by the way, seems to be an interesting company. In its own words, “quirky is a social product development company. Your product ideas come in, our community works on them, we sell your product worldwide, and 30¢ of every dollar brought in gets distributed amongst you and the product’s influencers.” You can submit your own product ideas or influence the development of others. But check it out for yourself as we don’t want to endorse an operation that might turn out to be a creativity slave machine..
