2010 – The year of the App

Over the next year, Apple will add 180,000 apps to the circa 120,000 it has already, according to to IDC predictions. In addition to Apple’s 300,000, IDC analysts also predict that Google will quadruple its Android applications to about 100,000. And this in the context of an explosion in mobile internet access. The number of us accessing the internet via a mobile device such as an iPhone has already reached 450 million and is set to reach a billion by 2013.

Apple claims to receive around 10,000 new app submissions per week and at the moment some 100 million apps are download from the Apple App Store each month – though more cautionary tech bloggers like Tony Bradley at PC World Security News point out that figures like these hide deletions and the inevitable lack of longevity of some apps.

Over the next few days, we’ll be bringing to your attention some of the more pointless apps available for your iPhone.
