Paper shredders ‘help welcome in 2008’

A piece of office equipment was used to help welcome in the new year during a unique ceremony in New York recently.

People were invited to join in the inaugural Good Riddance Day, using Paper shredders as a way to purge the memories of the previous year and pave the way for a fresh start.

An industrial-strength piece of office equipment was placed in the middle of Times Square in New York City and the public was welcome to use it to destroy bad memories of the previous year.

The idea was born when Tim Tomkins, president of the Times Square Alliance, heard about a Mexican tradition in which people make lists of bad experiences of the past, put them into a doll – and then burn the doll.

He though that Paper shredders would be a more fitting contemporary method of exploring the same sentiment.

Photos of ex-partners, negative medical reports and unpaid bills were some of the items that people brought to the event.

For the demolition of items that were not able to fit into Paper shredders, a sledgehammer was provided.

The Times Square Alliance aims to improve and promote the area.
