MoD bids to save on supplies

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced a recent shake-up to save millions of pounds on office supplies.

After Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) officials realised that several of its office supplies contracts were due to finish in September, the opted to combine all planned purchases.

The MoD commissioned Group Supplies to help structure a commercial tender process and four auctions were scheduled.

"The result was a reverse auction contract involving nine government departments, with winning bids totalling £132 million in an outcome expected to save the MoD £50 million over four years, and save all participants GBP 100 million overall," an MoD statement said.

"Deliveries will take place to the UK MoD, and to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, Home Office, Dept. of Constitutional Affairs, Metropolitan Police, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Treasury, Office of Government Commerce and Prison Service."

The MoD is both a policy-making state department, as well as being the highest level of military headquarters in Britain.

It controls resources for the armed forces of around £30 billion a year – which perhaps puts the monster office supplies bill into perspective.
