Forty-four percent of workers describe themselves as happy, according to an Office Angels-commissioned poll of 1,000. While there are regional pockets of gloom, this figure compares favourably to last year’s 37 percent. Also encouraging, the self-acknowledged unhappy fell from 24 to 20 percent.

The happiest age group was the 16-24-year-olds, with 55 percent saying they were happy, followed by those 55 and over (49%).

Regionally, Londoners were the happiest (52%), followed by Wales (47%). Workers in the East Midlands and South West (25% and 22% respectively saying they were unhappy) were the most miserable.

“The UK has experienced a remarkable summer; from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, to the Olympics and Paralympics Games,” said Steven Kirkpatrick, MD of Office Angels. “Whether our increased happiness is the result of the golden summer is impossible to say, but with a more positive outlook for the jobs market than there has been for some time, hopefully this trend is set to continue.”
