Make it a green Christmas

Seasonally sustainable ideas for work

This month we’re sharing our tips on how to have all the joy AND a greener Christmas.

1) Reduce

Send electronic Christmas cards
There are some startling statistics about our consumption at Christmas. For example, according to Imperial College researchers, 1.5 billion Christmas cards are thrown away by UK households each year. Reduce this card mountain by sending your clients ecards.

Ecards cut your carbon footprint, save trees and save money. You can even send a charity ecard and double the goodness. Marie Curie, the Sick Children’s Trust and Macmillan are just a few examples.

If you’re more Scrooge than Santa, there are some very funny free cards at somecards. Or if you’re after free electronic invites for your seasonal parties and gatherings try paperlesspost.

Cut down on plastic
We are now much more aware of plastic. According to the blog a sustainable life, the UK generates the weight of 3.3 million emperor penguins in plastic waste each Christmas. So rather than spend time and money on throwaway Christmas present for your clients, think about giving a charity gift.

Friends of the Earth are selling a Christmas bee saver kit. Alternatively, you can buy a goat or build a bog. There’s a good list of charity gifts on Money Saving Expert, which includes details on how much the charity actually gets.

Save electricity
Make sure someone turns off those festive lights when you leave the office at night. It is a simple, but effective way to reduce your energy consumption and your bills!

2) Reuse

Store your decorations
Don’t buy new Christmas decorations every year. Invest in a really useful storage box and stash them safely away for another year.

Use shredded paper for packaging
Fire up the paper shredder, or treat the office to a new machine and use the bi-product to package and protect gifts.

If you need shredding on a bigger scale, we also offer a complete paper shredding service, where we make sure all the tiny pieces are responsibly recycled.

3) Recycle

It’s estimated that recycling one tonne of paper saves about 17 trees and 26,500 litres of water. Make it easy for people to recycle with clearly marked bins around the workplace. If you’re unsure what to recycle and where, look up your local facilities.

Our Christmas gift to you!
This Christmas we’re giving you a little thank you gift. If you spend over £49, you’ll feast on Maltesers Reindeer. Or you can enjoy a box of Guylian chocolates if your order is worth over £99.
