The son of a US sheriff has been accused of stealing his dad’s office supplies as part of an ongoing investigation.

Justin Hewitt is accused of using office supplies belonging to Brunswick County police department in North Carolina, as well as using a sheriff’s deputy badge to protect his property, while a security system was being installed.

Mr Hewitt is the son of Ronald Hewitt, who has been sheriff of Brunswick Country for more than 14 years, until his suspension from the job last week, the Myrtle Beach Online reports.

While not being charged of "any crime", prosecutors have claimed that Mr Hewitt junior used office supplies as his own "school supplies", while also using one of the police department’s bulletproof vests without prior permission.

A testimony from Cynthia Stanley, an assistant to Sheriff Hewitt, stated: "One day, Justin came into my office and started loading up office supplies for [training].

"I asked him what he was doing and he said he was starting training and needed school supplies."

Investigations are continuing into the misuse of office supplies.
