Office equipment firm HP has announced that it has agreed to buy MacDermid ColorSpan, a manufacturer of wide-format digital inkjet printers.

MacDermid ColorSpan is a top supplier of UV-curable inkjet printers which are used for display graphics and are then supplied to sign shop franchises, quick printers and other screen-printing and sign-making companies.

HP said that its purchase would help it move more firmly into the sign shop and quick-printing market.

The organisation also said the deal expands its portfolio of wide-format printers, which will work towards its Print 2.0 strategy to digitise analogue prints by broadening it overarching digital content creation and publishing platform.

"This acquisition broadens HP‘s presence in the production space where the digitisation of analogue prints will happen," said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president of the Imaging and Printing Group at HP.

"MacDermid ColorSpan is a respected innovator in UV wide-format printing and should achieve tremendous synergies with our complementary wide-format platforms."

Meanwhile, MacDermid ColorSpan president Robert Wenzel said that said that the merger of his firm with the office equipment manufacturer will give customers "an expanded mix of quality, value and choice".

In addition to printers, HP offers a range of office machines, including scanners, copiers and fax machines.
