HP ponders relocating office equipment production

Office equipment One of the world's largest manufacturers of office supplies and office products could be set to downsize its operations in the part of the US where its success first began.

HP invented its inkjet technology - which has been used for inkjet cartridges for more than 20 years - at Corvallis, Oregon, in the 1980s and has had a major impact on the local jobs market and the economy ever since.

However, the Oregonian reports that the office products manufacturer could be set to axe up to 400 jobs at the site, moving production of some of its office equipment ranges to California and other sites around the world.

Despite this, HP's vice president Steve Nigro told the publication: "We'll want to take on our most challenging projects in our most capable sites.

"Corvallis is HP's most advanced technology site."

Last month, HP launched a programme in the US state of California to highlight consumer recycling of printer cartridges and inkjet cartridges.

HP signed a deal with the state government to provide recycling facilities at all state buildings so that HPprinter cartridges - as well as other brands - can be recycled.

Together, the partnership aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 500 tonnes per year.
