Xerox to cut colour toner price

Office products Office equipment manufacturer Xerox has vowed to undercut its rivals with the price of colour printing offered by its new product.

The Phaser 8860 is the flagship printer in range of five new machines the company is bringing on to the market - and the firm is aiming directly at competitor HP, Reuters reports.

In what could be good news for anybody procuring office supplies, it is claimed the Phaser 8860 can save make colour printing as cheap as black and white.

The new addition to Xerox's range of office machines uses solid ink technology, which works by using wax ink sticks rather than the printer cartridges used in laser printers.

With fewer disposable parts, Xerox claims that the printer can reduce the cost of colour printing to five cents (2.5p) a page.

Jim Rise, a vice president at Xerox, said: "If you compare HP color toner to what our inks will be, we will be one-fifth the price.

"We think it's going to help us grow our market share and attract a lot of customers who maybe don't consider Xerox today."

Xerox claims to offer "the document industry's broadest portfolio of offerings", ranging from black-and-white printers to laser and solid ink printers.
