Green office equipment 'can save money and emissions'

Office equipment UK businesses could make significant energy savings by focusing more on green office equipment, it has been claimed.

Writing in IT Advisor, Hugh Jones from the Carbon Trust suggested a variety of measures which can be undertaken to ensure that office machines and printers are as environmentally-friendly as possible.

First, he advised that companies establish a policy for purchasing new office equipment, as well as guidelines to help managers make the right choices.

Additionally, he said that switching off non-essential office machines such as computers at the end of each day could save around 60 per cent of office equipment running costs.

Regarding printers in particular, Mr Jones recommended that the office machines be positioned in ventilated spaces or naturally cool areas to cut down on artificial cooling needs. He also discussed the possibility of minimising the amount of time printers spend idling between printing and standby modes.

Finally, he remarked that "well-maintained office equipment will be more efficient and will last longer", which suggests that it should be serviced regularly.

The Carbon Trust estimates that employing simple energy-saving measures could help UK firms save a total of £51 million.
