Free refills for printer cartridges offered

People bringing their empty printer cartridges into US retailer Walgreens are able to obtain free refills, it has emerged.

On Wednesday, September 12th, more than 3,000 of the stores are offering free refills for inkjet printer cartridges as part of a promotional campaign.

The retailer already offers refills on printer cartridges at select store locations and has said it plans to grow the business nationwide.

"We hope even more people will decide to try the service for free on Wednesday," Walgreens photofinishing general merchandise manager John Sugrue told the Recycler.

"Customers appreciate having a more convenient, affordable way to get back to the printing tasks without sacrificing quality."

He added that those taking part in the programme can feel good "about keeping printer cartridges out of landfills".

Both black and colour printer cartridges can be refilled and each comes with a 100 per cent guarantee.

Last month, InfoTrends surveyed original equipment manufacturers and remanufacturers of printer cartridges in both the US and Europe and discovered that 80 per cent of remanufactured toner cartridges and 86 per cent of inkjet cartridges are discarded instead of recycled.
