Xerox printer cartridges recycling drive 'a success'

Inkjet cartridges Xerox's efforts to reach one of its sustainability milestones regarding printer cartridges recycling have been successful, the company has announced.

The office equipment manufacturer has managed to avoid sending a total of two billion pounds of electronic waste - including printer cartridges - to landfills.

Xerox explained that it has used various initiatives to reach its goal, including one that encourages people to reuse and recycle their printer supplies. It also operates a scheme in which it takes back and recycles products used with office machines.

Patricia Calkins, Xerox vice president of environment, health and safety, said that the office supplies firm engages in eco-friendly practices from the manufacturing stage onwards.

"Xerox's experience with reuse, recycling and remanufacturing has not only kept waste out of landfills, but saved the company more than $2 billion (£980 million) as it did so," she remarked.

"If that amount of waste were loaded into garbage trucks, it would fill more than 160,000 trucks, stretching more than 1,000 miles, from Seattle to the Mexican border."

Sustainability "is an integral part" of office products development, she added.

This month, Xerox released its Our Word, Our Work, Our World report.
