Windows phones prepare for BlackBerry applications

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) is set to release its software on Microsoft Windows Mobile handsets, meaning users can run BlackBerry applications on their Windows phone.

The importance of mobile office technology has grown significantly in recent years and BlackBerry software has been an integral part of that growth.

Users will be able to select between either BlackBerry or Windows Mobile functions easily, as the BlackBerry Applications Suite icon will appear on the Windows Mobile device.

Among the features available via the BlackBerry Applications Suite are email, phone, text messaging, browser, instant messaging and organiser, as well as access to any enterprise applications that a firm may have set up for the Blackberry.

David Yach, senior vice president of software at RIM, told itweek.co.uk: "Customers have told us that they like the BlackBerry experience, but some groups of employees need Windows Mobile handsets because of some special capability or application.

"However, these customers still want to have the application environment and policy enforcement possible with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server."

Mr Yach also refuted suggestions that RIM was moving away from developing hardware systems and suggested the development could help the company shift more of their own handheld devices.
