Office equipment manufacturer expands green energy use

HP Printer cartridges HP is to expand its impact on tackling climate change by installing green technology at its office machines development sites in the US and Ireland, it has emerged.

The office supplies company has agreed a power purchasing agreement with renewable energy company SunPower, which will cut energy costs by around $750,000 (£363,686) over the next 15 years.

A solar power installation will be built at the office equipment provider's facility in San Diego as part of the move.

Some 5,000 solar panels will be installed across five of its buildings and will convert enough power from the sun's light to run ten per cent of HP's office equipment running costs.

The firm has also announced an agreement with Airtricity that will convert about 90 per cent of the office machines developer's power use into renewable energy.

"Switching to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power makes both environmental and business sense," commented Pat Tiernan, vice president of social and environmental responsibility at HP.

Office equipment manufactured by HP includes desktops and workstations, notebooks, multifunction printers and printer cartridges.
