Students want office supplies taken care of

Students in Wales have lobbied their university to implement better environmental provisions, according to the newspaper Gair Rhydd.

The weekly paper has reported that 2,000 students have signed a petition calling on Cardiff University's senior staff members to work at bettering its environmental record and to increase the amount of recycling of office supplies and other municipal waste currently being undertaken.

Vice chancellor Dr David Grant has been presented with the petition in the hope that he will act on it and implement greener principles across the university's campuses.

John Cowie, president of the Cardiff branch of the People & Planet student movement, told Gair Rhydd: "There is no reason for the vice chancellor to refuse to go green. It will save the University money by cutting energy and resource costs."

According to recent figures, the UK's higher education sector is responsible for emitting three million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, through office equipment, inappropriate recycling and other pollutant creating practices.

And Cardiff University has said that it is already implementing a number of practices throughout its departments. These include staff car sharing schemes, office supply recycling and the use of green energy in 21 of its buildings.
