It sold at Christies for $3 million after exhibition in the Royal Academy\u2019s \u2018Apocalypse\u2019 in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Portrait of Pope Innocent X by Diego Vel\u00e1zquez<\/strong> and <strong>4. \u2018The Screaming Pope\u2019<\/strong>. Vel\u00e1zquez&#8217;s oil on canvas ca. 1650 is considered one of the great portraits of all time. This painting was reinterpreted by Francis Bacon in 1953 in his \u2018Study after Vel\u00e1zquez&#8217;s Portrait of Pope Innocent X\u2019. Bacon\u2019s Pope grips the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/office-furniture\/office-chairs\/c-2001\">chair<\/a> in a nightmare \u2013 his or ours \u2013 as the painting itself seems to consume its subject.
