Since then, it\u2019s completely reshaped how businesses handle data &#8211; everything from cybersecurity to how that stack of printed invoices is stored (or\u2026 not stored!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: while offices have mostly got their systems in place, remote work has changed the game. And not everyone got the memo.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, with hybrid and home working now the norm, it\u2019s a good time to ask: are your remote workers GDPR compliant?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does GDPR apply at home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Short answer: Yes. Absolutely. The consequences can be serious &#8211; fines, legal trouble, and damaging your company\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What should a remote work policy for GDPR actually include?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your policy is a bit vague, or non-existent, now\u2019s the time to tighten things up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a minimum, it should clearly cover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who is allowed to take documents home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What type of paperwork can leave the office.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How documents should be transported.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is allowed to print at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How paperwork should be stored and disposed of.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What to do if something goes missing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to report a potential data breach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The more specific, the better. Guesswork is not your friend when it comes to compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Home security basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need a full IT department at home &#8211; but a few essentials go a long way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Secure passwords\" class=\"wp-image-7109 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>At the very least, remote workers should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lock their screen when stepping away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a secure WiFi network (no dodgy open connections).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable strong passwords (we use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastpass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LastPass<\/a> to create and store all our company passwords).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/reviews\/troubleshooting-tips\/article\/what-is-two-factor-authentication-and-should-you-use-it-aRJAb2U2tZif?source_code=911CQJ&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_content=generic&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21423541351&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwwJzPBhBREiwAJfHRneAvCuxhjLhlnXmWGDAgchKK81UpVDppN1eZJNClHrnDvTeH4NkwdhoCM6IQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2-factor authentication<\/a> (2FA) wherever possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For businesses, it\u2019s also worth considering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VPNs to secure connections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Device monitoring tools to spot unusual activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enforced encryption on company devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all about reducing risk without making work impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to GDPR, the right equipment isn\u2019t a \u201cnice to have\u201d &#8211; it\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re talking about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Secure laptops and devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encrypted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/computer-accessories\/data-storage\/usb-memory-sticks\/l-6829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USBs<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/computer-accessories\/data-storage\/hard-drives\/l-7443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">storage<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reliable software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/office-machines-supplies\/shredders-supplies\/shredders\/l-7128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shredders<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do I really need to shred documents at home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! One of the biggest misconceptions about GDPR is that it only applies to digital data.
