Deadlines, constant connectivity, juggling tasks, working alone, or balancing working within a team &#8211; all of these pressures add up. That\u2019s why this day gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and think about what more we can do to support mental wellbeing in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To understand why mental health at work needs attention, here are a few stats to think about:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/explore-mental-health\/statistics\/mental-health-work-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In 2022\/23<\/a>, around 875,000 workers in the UK suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety &#8211; new or ongoing cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Squeezing stress ball\" class=\"wp-image-6720 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those issues cost 17.1 million working days lost over the same period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Poor mental wellbeing isn\u2019t just about absence: UK employers are losing an estimated \u00a356 billion every year due to absenteeism, presenteeism (being at work but less productive), and staff turnover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spill.chat\/mental-health-statistics\/workplace-mental-health-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About 28%<\/a> of all sick days in the UK are linked to mental health issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Worryingly, only a small proportion of employees (<a href=\"https:\/\/stribehq.com\/resources\/workplace-mental-health-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 14% in some surveys<\/a>) feel comfortable talking openly about their mental health at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These numbers are big. They affect individuals, teams, businesses &#8211; and society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What World Mental Health Day is all about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage understanding amongst one another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It gives us a chance to think about access to support and services, and re-evaluate what\u2019s available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To remind employers and leaders that mental health isn\u2019t just a \u201cnice-to-have.\u201d It\u2019s central to sustainable work, productivity, satisfaction &#8211; and retaining great people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What workplaces can do to support mental wellbeing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Flexible working &amp; respecting boundaries<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let people manage their hours where possible. Respecting &#8220;out of hours&#8221; helps reduce burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Create a comfy workspace<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The right equipment, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/office-furniture\/office-chairs\/operator-chairs\/l-4245#filter_chair-usage=Ergonomic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ergonomic<\/a> furniture, and overall environment can reduce physical strain &#8211; which in turn supports mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Promote open conversation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Make mental health something that can be talked about. Normalise check-ins and encourage safe, non-judgemental conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Signpost support<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure employees know about mental health services, from Employee Assistance Programmes to charities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mind<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rethink.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rethink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Mental health\" class=\"wp-image-6721 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Train managers &amp; leaders<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Equip those in leadership roles to recognise the early signs of stress or anxiety, and give them tools to respond compassionately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Encourage healthy habits<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From regular breaks and movement to team social time &#8211; small changes can make a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Review workload &amp; expectations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check that tasks are manageable, and when people are overloaded, find out how you can support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lead by example<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If leaders respect their own boundaries, take breaks, and look after their wellbeing, it gives everyone else permission to do the same. Practice what you preach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it\u2019s good for business too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting mental health isn\u2019t just the right thing to do. It also makes good business sense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/kelly-sikkema-XX2WTbLr3r8-unsplash-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6719 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/kelly-sikkema-XX2WTbLr3r8-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/kelly-sikkema-XX2WTbLr3r8-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/kelly-sikkema-XX2WTbLr3r8-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Happier staff = more productivity and less turnover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced sick days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A stronger reputation as an employer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better customer service, because staff who feel supported are more engaged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This World Mental Health Day, here are a couple of small steps we can all commit to:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In the workplace<\/em>: set up one new wellbeing initiative (e.g. awareness training, or a \u201cquiet hour\u201d once a week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As colleagues<\/em>: reach out to someone you haven\u2019t checked in with lately and ask how they\u2019re really doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As individuals<\/em>: schedule some downtime, or reorganise your workspace to feel more comfortable and less stressful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>World Mental Health Day is once a year, but it&#8217;s place in the workplace is a 365-day concern.
