We\u2019ve made this blog as simple as possible to help you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Check if the rules apply to you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your business has 10 or more full-time equivalent employees, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biffa.co.uk\/support-resources\/simpler-recycling?utm_source=google-ads&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_agid=&amp;utm_term=&amp;creative=&amp;device=c&amp;placement={placement&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=22755778078&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjww-3VBhAcEiwAwUUIu6OWT4njw26fRRXbaba-WA_6oTFD_LW0j1J_AAl0VgBvwGkIHnUi6BoCLJsQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simpler Recycling<\/a> rules already apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means you need to separate recyclable waste, food waste and non-recyclable waste before it\u2019s collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Got fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees? You\u2019re classed as a micro-firm and have until 31 March 2027 to comply &#8211; although there\u2019s nothing stopping you getting ahead now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Rethink your bins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still have a bin under every desk? It might be time for a rethink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Clearly labelled recycling bin for waste separation\" class=\"wp-image-6267 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Green-office-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central waste and recycling stations make it much easier for everyone to separate their rubbish correctly &#8211; and can help cut down on those rogue coffee cups ending up where they shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number and type of bins you need will depend on your workplace and the arrangements you have with your waste collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Know your waste<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a minimum, workplaces need to keep these waste streams separate before collection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food waste &#8211; yes, even those occasional banana skins, tea bags or lunchtime leftovers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry recycling &#8211; plastic, metal, glass, paper and card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-recyclable waste &#8211; anything that can\u2019t be recycled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paper and card generally need to be collected separately from plastic, metal and glass, although your waste collector may be able to collect them together in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need a little more help? No excuses for putting your lunch leftovers in the recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Get your team on board<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A shiny new recycling station is only half the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let your team know what\u2019s changing, where the bins are and &#8211; most importantly &#8211; what goes in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re removing individual desk bins, explain why. A quick email, a few signs and clear labels around your waste stations can make the switch much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 7: Do regular checks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only takes a few things in the wrong bin to cause problems, so check your waste stations regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear or translucent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/janitorial\/rubbish-bins-bags\/bin-bags-liners\/l-1531#filter_colour=Clear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waste sacks<\/a> can make it easier to spot contamination before your waste is collected and identify where your team might need a reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting it right also means more material has the chance to actually be recycled rather than ending up in landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about Digital Waste Tracking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s another waste change on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 1 October 2026, permitted or licensed organisations that receive controlled waste in England and Wales will need to digitally report details of the waste they receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most ordinary workplaces, this doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;ll suddenly need to log every bag of rubbish yourself. The initial reporting requirement sits with permitted or licensed organisations receiving the waste.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-images-24.jpg\" alt=\"Waste measuring\" class=\"wp-image-7388 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-images-24.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-images-24-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-images-24-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it will create a more consistent digital record of waste movements &#8211; another good reason to make sure your workplace has clear waste processes in place and that you\u2019re following the Simpler Recycling requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And there are more changes coming in 2027.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 31 March 2027:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Micro-firms with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees will also need to comply with Simpler Recycling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastic film and plastic bags will be added to the plastic recycling stream for workplace collections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you&#8217;re reviewing your recycling setup now, it\u2019s worth thinking ahead.
