Boris Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/pm-address-to-the-nation-on-coronavirus-23-march-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> we&#8217;d only be allowed to leave home to shop for basic goods, exercise once a day, or for essential work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this latest blog post, we talk to Jim, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/\">Pa<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perstone&#8217;s<\/a> CEO &amp; Co-Founder, about the ups, downs, twists, and turns to navigate the next 600+ days of the global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has the pandemic changed Paperstone? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Profoundly. Our main supplier went bust, our customers (mostly) stopped going to the office and sales dropped by 40%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What actions did you take to survive the storm?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/domenico-loia-hGV2TfOh0ns-unsplash-2-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/domenico-loia-hGV2TfOh0ns-unsplash-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/domenico-loia-hGV2TfOh0ns-unsplash-2-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/domenico-loia-hGV2TfOh0ns-unsplash-2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/domenico-loia-hGV2TfOh0ns-unsplash-2.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We had a backup supplier already in place so we quickly switched everything to them. I likened it to running a marathon whilst having open heart surgery as we were taking orders throughout the switch over.  <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/contact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our team<\/a> started working fully remotely in April 2020. A huge change to our old office environment. <\/li><li>We dug deep and made sure that we were looking after the customers we still had.<\/li><li>We pivoted our offering towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperstone.co.uk\/home-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home users<\/a> offering smaller pack sizes where we could and promoting contact-free deliveries to their doorstep.<\/li><li>Very sadly, as a direct impact of fewer sales, we had to let 4 members of our close-knit team go. We knew office life wasn\u2019t about to quickly return.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s been your biggest challenge?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying positive and focused during so much change and so many hurdles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s your biggest learning?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment I would say it\u2019s been about the team and how resilient everyone is. I\u2019m not sure that will be the biggest learning as I haven\u2019t had time to fully reflect on the events of the last 22+ months with enough perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are your predictions for the future of the office supplies industry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have no doubt it will be a smaller industry. Technology and changing workplaces were already reducing demand in a pre-covid world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry needs to continue evolving to make sure the products we offer are fit for the changing working environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry has already gone through large changes. Think back to when the photocopier and fax machine were the hive of office activity. Those times have long since gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the industry has to learn how to service a fragmented customer base, consuming fewer products. It\u2019s not so much a step-change, more an evolution of what was already happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anything else you&#8217;d like to share with our readers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In society, we all have an important role in choosing which companies we support and where we spend our money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people agree that a bustling high street filled with independent shops is good for a community. I agree and love such towns. Do I spend most of my money in that way? Sadly no. When I\u2019m driving through, it&#8217;s usually after 5.30 pm and most shops are closed. I don\u2019t have time to make the journey during a normal working day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shop in the evening when my children are asleep, so most of my shopping is online. And that brings about a new debate\u2026are all internet companies greedy, faceless, money machines? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or does a well-rated, independent company staffed by experts who happen to choose not to have a high street store to keep prices low \u2013 despite not always being the cheapest \u2013 get my money instead? Yes, they do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately does it matter? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I believe it does. We built Paperstone on traditional values with a forward-facing outlook.
