Mayanist scholars contest the significance of the date,   saying that the date&#8217;s apocalyptic import &ndash; &ldquo;the 2012 phenomenon&rdquo; &ndash; is a pseudo-scientific or paranoid or opportunist fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>Step forward the opportunists.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" onclick=\"PS.Core.Popup(this, 800, 600);return false;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/076116510X\/ref=asc_df_076116510X5463854?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&amp;tag=googlecouk06-21&amp;linkCode=asn&amp;creative=22206&amp;creativeASIN=076116510X\">Doomsday! 2012 Calendar<\/a> is described by its makers as &ldquo;irreverent countdown to the Mayan day of destruction&rdquo; and takes the apocalypse with a pinch of salt, &#8217;50s movies aesthetic and jokes included.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" onclick=\"PS.Core.Popup(this, 800, 600);return false;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/1416287310\/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=103612307&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=076116510X&amp;pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&amp;pf_rd_r=1ETBK7DQPDR01BFE8Y99\">Apocalypse Doomsday Countdown Calendar<\/a>  showcases the illustrative art of <a title=\"Opens in a new window\" onclick=\"PS.Core.Popup(this, 800, 600);return false;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/69636528@N03\/sets\/72157628000698019\/\">Ed Koenders<\/a> who casts a slighly wryer eye over the end of days (see below).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" alt=\"Vegas apocalypse\" src=\"\/images\/NewsImages\/2011\/ed-koenders-vegas-apocalyse.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But one Amazon reviewer is disgruntled with the Apocalypse Calendar for having ten too many days.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Even though it acknowledges the end of the word on December 21st, 2012, it shows December 22nd and continues through the end of the year,&rdquo; he rants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Even more insulting, it include[s] a mini calendar of January 2013. How false and misleading can you get! How wasteful. Do we have to get ripped off all the way to the end of the world?
