Beaumont, who usually wrote his stories using a typewriter, also wrote some tales under the pseudonym of George Stark.<\/p>\n<p>When he was writing as Stark he always used a pencil instead of his typewriter.<\/p>\n<p>Beaumont decides he needs to shed his alter ego, but Stark appears in physical form and begins to use the pencil as a weapon against the flesh-and-blood author.<\/p>\n<p>The spooky pencil in King\u2019s story, according to James Ward\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Adventures-Stationery-Journey-Through-Pencil\/dp\/1846686156\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\">Adventures in Stationery<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0 was based on the Berol Black Beauty pencil which no longer exists.<\/p>\n<p>You can also find out more about the fascinating history of pencils at the <a href=\"http:\/\/berol.org\/historyofpencils.html\">Berol website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The innocent pencil, a symbol of artistry and early childhood scribblings, has also been ascribed a darker side over the years.
