A recent survey of UK office workers has shown widespread frustration at the use of management speak.<\/p>\n

Three-quarters of the 2,000 polled were annoyed by their line managers using vacuous workplace jargon such as \u201cpush the envelope<\/a>\u201d. \u201cThink outside the box\u201d, \u201cblue sky thinking\u201d and \u201chit the ground running\u201d were deemed the worst offending phrases while newcomers \u201cblamestorming\u201d and \u201cpresenteeism\u201d scored well in the jargon hate list.<\/p>\n

Such language irks, some argue, because it is associated with a lack of action. For this same reason, it should not be used in attempts to motivate staff.<\/p>\n

Says business psychologist Dr Rob Yeung, \u201cPeople may fall into the trap of using jargon because they forget that the jargon may be meaningless to others who aren\u2019t familiar with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt may become confusing or irritating for employees to hear the same tired clich\u00e9s when they don\u2019t see such management jargon being turned into useful action.<\/p>\n

\u201cJargon can be confusing and unnecessary so much of the time, therefore managers would be better off thinking about how to communicate in plain English.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
