While many of us were eating, drinking and making merry over Christmas and New Year, thousands of people went online and completed their end-of-year tax returns!<\/p>\n

You may think it an unusual way to spend the festive season, but for some uber-efficient or just plain worried souls, it was the pathway to inner contentment.<\/p>\n

HM Revenue and Customs has revealed that a record-breaking 24,546 people submitted their tax return online on New Year\u2019s Eve \u2013\u00a0a 2.8% rise on last year\u2019s figures.<\/p>\n

Another 11,467 people sent off their Self Assessment tax return on New Year\u2019s Day 2016 itself, with more than 600 people submitting their totals before 10am.<\/p>\n

The number of HMRC customers completing their tax return on Christmas Day broke records at 2,044 \u2013\u00a0an increase of 13% on 25 December 2014.<\/p>\n

And on Boxing Day, 5,402 shunned the sales and instead completed their Self Assessment online.<\/p>\n

Ruth Owen, Director General of Personal Tax, HMRC, said, \u201cAs we all enjoy the festive season it\u2019s easy to see how completing your tax return can be forgotten, but the deadline will be here quicker than we think.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur advice is don\u2019t leave it until it\u2019s too late. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and remember our online service is available with helpful advice and handy tips any time of the year, whether that\u2019s on Christmas Day, or even New Year\u2019s Eve.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deadline for sending 2014-15 tax returns to HMRC, and paying any tax owed, is 31 January 2016. If you are completing your 2014-15 Self Assessment return online for the first time, you will need to register for SA Online. Registering for online filing is simple \u2013 you can do it online at www.gov.uk\/register-for-self-assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n
