Here\u2019s a list you can check off:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Birth, adoption and death certificates<\/li>\n<li>National Insurance and NHS cards<\/li>\n<li>Pension plan documents<\/li>\n<li>ID cards and passports<\/li>\n<li>Marriage certificate and certificates of divorce<\/li>\n<li>Business registration documents and deeds<\/li>\n<li>Educational certificates and proof of professional qualifications<\/li>\n<li>Any insurance policy<\/li>\n<li>Wills and powers of attorney<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle documentation<\/li>\n<li>Bank loan documentation<\/li>\n<li>House deeds and mortgage documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might find other documents which you know will be hard to replace without a lengthy and time-consuming process, so use your common sense and keep them as hard copies.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some documents which need keeping for a number of years, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tax records and receipts (keep for six years if self-employed, two years if employed)<\/li>\n<li>Pay slips and bank statements (keep for a year)<\/li>\n<li>Home purchase, sale, or improvement documents (keep for six years after you sell)<\/li>\n<li>Warranty documents and receipts (keep as long as you own them)<\/li>\n<li>Council tax bills and utility bills (six months for ID purposes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, there are documents which get updates every year, and it\u2019s a good idea to keep the most recent version for reference. These include annual insurance policy statements and annual pension statements.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s probably covered all of your really important stuff. So shred the rest, and organise all of the papers you want to keep in a nice neat filing cabinet.
