Office equipment<\/a> manufacturer HP<\/a> needs to do more to ensure that its printer cartridges<\/a> are recycled, a new report claims.<\/p>\n

A study by Lyra Research reveals that HP<\/a> is responsible for the production of over half of the 500 million inkjet cartridges and 75 million laser cartridges which are sold each year in North America, AlterNet reports.<\/p>\n

However, the data also indicates that around half of those empty printer cartridges<\/a> are discarded rather than recycled.<\/p>\n

Although HP<\/a> has an electronic recycling programme which permits customers to post their empty printer cartridges<\/a> back to the office supplies<\/a> firm in a postage-paid envelope, environmental watchdogs have suggested that the company is not doing enough to cut its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

In July, HP<\/a> concluded its drive to recycle one billion pounds of electronic products within a specified timeframe, with recycled inkjet cartridges and laser cartridges comprising one-quarter of the total, according to HP<\/a>‘s environmental marketing manager for North America Jean Gingras.<\/p>\n

However, Greenpeace’s September issue of its Guide to Greener Electronics placed the office machines<\/a> firm near the bottom of a ranking of 15 companies’ green efforts.<\/p>\n
