Mobile Phone Turns 40

The mobile phone, now so ubiquitous in everyday life, turned 40 this week. On 3rd April 1973 Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made a call on a clunky, heavy handset to a rival at Bell Labs, Dr. Joel S. Engel.

The first mobile telephone call in the UK was made considerably later, with Ernie Wise doing the honours in 1985.
