Antitrust lawsuit involving printer cartridges
19/12/2007 18:08
Office products retailer Staples and office equipment manufacturer HP have been accused of breaching antitrust laws based on the sale of third-party printer cartridges, it has emerged. Based on the allegation that HP paid the office products supplier over $100 million (£49.8 million) to ensure that it refrained from selling cheaper, third-party inkjet cartridges, a US man has filed a lawsuit with Boston's district court. Research behind the claim has not yet been revealed by Ranjit Bedi, who is suing this office supplies retailer for breaking marketing laws under the Sherman Act and Clayton Act, Reuters reports. The filed suit refers to the use of "market development funds" in "an illegal agreement between competitors to stop competing", the news agency notes. Third-party manufacturers of printer cartridges have been a thorn in the side of leading office equipment manufacturers since they are able to sell replacement cartridges for their printer models at a fraction of the price. HP, Epson and Lenovo are among the office machines suppliers who have attempted to use either legal patents or the digital millennium copyright act to crush third-party manufacturers of inkjet cartridges, reports ars technica. Brother recently won a legal case against Dynamic Supplies following the retail of printer drum units in the name of the former, despite the office products having a different specification to Brother's own-branded printer drum units, reports Innovative Solutions.

Printer cartridges 'can be turned into furniture'
11/12/2007 17:27
Garden furniture and fence posts could be the product of a firm's used printer cartridges under a new firm's office equipment recycling scheme. UK-based Waycam Technologies has said it will recycle inkjet cartridges on behalf of office equipment users without depositing any parts in landfill sites. Users of printer cartridges can register for the scheme via the printer supplies group's website. Inkjet cartridges that have been re-used by the re-manufacturing industry have often been discarded in landfill sites where they take hundreds of years to decay and leak toner powder into the surrounding earth, Waycam said. "[Waycam] are promoting the only UK solution for 100 per cent recycling of all parts of a toner cartridge and reusing the raw materials rather than sending them to landfill," the group said. The move to fully recycle printer cartridges will also help firms to reduce their carbon footprint, the company noted. Many printer cartridges have also been saved from landfill sites in Australia under a Cartridges 4 Planet Ark campaign, which claims to have reused or recycled 5.5 million inkjet cartridges, reports PC World.

Lexmark: Smarter use of printer cartridges saves money
06/12/2007 17:17
Firms could generate benefits for both their office equipment budgets and the environment if they use printer cartridges more responsibly, it has been suggested. Energy-efficient usage of office products, in addition to the recycling of used inkjet cartridges, will help tackle climate change while also providing cost-saving benefits to businesses, according to Lexmark. The office equipment supplier currently offers users free printer cartridges each time a firm recycles three used ones through Lexmark. Users with empty inkjet cartridges can recycle their used office products by applying for free postage packaging via the company's website. "Our products, solutions and services can help you get more done while being environmentally and fiscally responsible," said Marty Canning, president of printing solutions at Lexmark. Office equipment users should also use print preview to streamline documents avoid printing unnecessary pages and wasting their printer cartridges, the company suggested. "This can be especially helpful when printing Excel files, where content in a single cell can lead to many unnecessary printed pages," the office products supplier added. Business owners looking to update their office equipment with a new printer should take into account the content of the documents they print, such as photos or text, and whether they need access to copy, scan and fax functions, Lexmark recently commented.
