Call issued for printer cartridges to be recycled

Printer cartridges A cartridge business has launched a campaign to encourage more people to reuse their printer cartridges by having them refilled.

Figures compiled by Cartridge World state that the average printer cartridge takes 450 years to fully decompose, while an estimated 350 million printer cartridges that could be reused are thrown away each year - representing 70 per cent of all used.

Executive chairman of Cartridge World Peter Hasko said: "Recycling programs for cans, bottles and papers are mainstream, but few realise the additional impact they can make by reusing and refilling printer ink cartridges."

The recycling of printer cartridges is an easy way for eco-conscious consumers to green their home and save some money, with refills often costing up to half the price of a replacement, the website reports.

Further environmentally friendly advice offered by the company for home and workplace computer use includes using rewritable CDs and DVDs, printing on both sides of paper, turning off all electrical equipment at night and decreasing print margins before printing.

However, one environmental organisation has warned customers to exercise caution when purchasing second-hand colour print cartridges, as expert colour control is needed for the fine balance of required for quality image printing.
