WiMax speeding up
19/03/2007 16:51
Rapid progress in wireless connectivity could see handheld and portable devices offering speeds of up to six megabits per second, according to experts.
WiMax speeds could be reaching levels outlined by experts at Samsung by 2008, with plans to offer even faster connections by the end of the decade being put in place.
Long-term evolution (LTE) technology is rapidly advancing and could hit speeds of 100 megabits per second for downloads by 2010.
3GPP is believed to be developing fast LTE connections, with exceedingly fast upload and download speeds for businesses and consumers.
Hung Song, vice president of the global marketing group at Samsung, told IT Week: "We are targeting mobile TV and multimedia broadcasting, but also enterprise customers who want to run office applications, like sales people that want to check inventories in real time transmissions."
WiMax acts as the final connection between devices and networks, offering a speedy alternative to DSL and traditional cable connections.
Moreover, Mobile WiMax can be used in a wide range of portable devices to give them nippy connection speeds to wireless and 3G networks.
