Switch off office equipment, energy firm says

Office equipment Businesses across the UK are being encouraged to turn off their office equipment over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Energy company npower is leading the call for the switching off of office machines over the three-day weekend, in order to help reduce CO2 emissions, the Worcester News reports.

According to the Carbon Trust, firms waste £2 billion per year from poor energy-efficient practices, including the average office wasting more than £6,000 from keeping office equipment switched on over the weekend.

Nigel Alcock, a spokesperson for npower business, told the publication that "small steps can make a big difference".

"If everyone gets involved in joining the Big Switch Off this August Bank Holiday and turns off their unused equipment, the combined financial savings and emission reduction can be significant," he said.

"We hope that businesses will see the benefits of joining the Big Switch Off and make turning off equipment something they do every weekend."

The eco-friendly recommendations follow an outcry from Swedish campaigners regarding the amount of recycled office supplies used by the government.

According to the Swiss Association for the Promotion of Ecological Paper and Ecology in the Workplace, use of the green office supplies - such as recycled paper - fell from 51 to 33 per cent over the past six years.
