Paper shredders critical in fight against fraud

The soaring levels of identity fraud and similar crimes have led ABC Office to recommend that offices consider paper shredders as a solution.

As an online office supplies company in the US, ABC recognises the need for businesses to maximise security and guard against fraud.

It is trying to educate people about the dangers posed by ID fraud and the measures companies can take to prevent it.

The office supplies firm highlighted mail, including bank and credit card statements, credit card offers, new checks and tax information and other personal documents found in a home as potential sources ID for fraudsters.

It suggested that such personal printed information can be wiped out with the use of paper shredders.

An ABC Office statement said: "Although not all identity theft is caused from printed material, it is considered a good habit to keep paper shredders in any location where mail, paperwork and sensitive material is handled and discarded.

"This may be a kitchen, the office or even the garage. Shredding all discarded mail is an important habit to develop. Many paper shredders can even shred CDs and DVDs that often include personal information that can be read on any computer."
