Office workers want nicer surroundings

Office supplies Office desks up and down the country are often home to a variety of morale boosting pick-me-ups.

It's not uncommon to see mascots and photos of family and loved ones taking their place among the general array of office supplies.

And judging by the results in a recent survey by plant firm Ambius, offices need to rethink their dismal settings or continue to lose millions of pounds a year over sick pay.

The survey revealed that staff needed to take time off to get away from their "depressing" office spaces, with almost 50 per cent of the 1,000 people quizzed saying they found their office "gloomy"

But the survey did reveal that additions of plants and natural light would boost morale and productivity, adding that extra space, ventilation and greenery would benefit offices.

Jeff Mariola from Ambius revealed that fewer than 25 per cent of workers found their office space stimulating.

Half of the people surveyed said nicer offices were as vital as days off and four in five people said the office environment was something they considered when taking a job.

Mr Mariola said: "It's no surprise that a kind of desk despair syndrome is setting in, taking its toll on motivation and productivity."
