New camera-printer does not need printer cartridges

Printer cartridges A new camera-printer has been invented which does not require printer cartridges - or any ink at all.

Zink Imaging has developed a machine which utilises millions of colourless dye crystals which are layered under polymer-coated paper.

These crystals are then heated at different temperatures at various intervals so that they melt into colours - the same cyan, magenta, yellow and black combinations which are present in printer cartridges.

Zink's chief marketing officer Scott Wicker said that the lack of necessity for printer cartridges means that printers can be built in smaller devices, which could widen the variety of office equipment available for consumers.

However, IDC analyst Ron Glaz told Digital Arts that the innovative new technology would probably not replace traditional office machines in the near future.

"It's a niche product for a niche market," he told the publication.

In early July, Zink announced that it had signed a deal to take over a manufacturing plant that had once belonged to office machines company Konica Minolta so that it could deliver further office supplies developments.

The company claims that it's "main goal" is to create products which eradicate the need for printer cartridges and toner.
