Kodak takes on HP in inkjet war
17/05/2007 17:04
Kodak's attempts to compete with global printer supplies market leader Hewlett-Packard (HP) have been satirised in the New York Times.
The famous US newspaper has taken a light-hearted look at Kodak's printing war with HP and drawn attention to the low cost inkjet cartridges Kodak is offering to consumers.
Although Kodak's new inkjet printers cost more, they do come with printer, scanner and copier facilities.
And the Times also praised the Kodak models for their "beautiful glossy prints" and the high speeds at which they produce them.
It is the first time Kodak has entered the inkjet printer market solo, after it began a joint venture with Lexmark a few years back.
The Times article went on to speculate whether or not Kodak's inkjets saved people money or not, branding it the "64,000-litre question".
"Kodak's black cartridge costs $10 and prints 350 pages (of an industry-standard test document). Ink cost per page: 2.8 cents," the paper revealed.
"HP's current black cartridge costs $18 and prints 660 pages, for an ink cost per page of 2.7 cents. The HP wins by a hair."
It goes on to reveal that Kodak is successful in most other scenarios, suggesting the printer supplies war has just begun.
