Ink cartridges provide free entry to event

Printer cartridges Californian's Sustainable Energy Fair and Solar Tour 2007 is attracting customers to its cause by offering free entry to anyone who brings with them an empty printer cartridge.

The enticement is intended to get the message out to local residents and businesses that energy conservation - and in particular recycling - is of crucial importance to sustainable development.

According to the British Red Cross just five per cent of inkjet printer cartridges are actually recycled, despite the fact that their reuse offers significant savings to industry and help reduce the volume of non-biodegradable plastics filling up landfill sites.

Karen Erickson, co-chairman of the Sustainable Energy Fair, is desperately trying to change that trend by increasing awareness of environmentally-responsible IT practices.

"We are trying to educate our community about renewable energies," she told the Everett Herald newspaper. "We're trying to get them to jump onto the bus and to think about what the heck they're doing."

Previous incentives based around printer cartridge recycling have included the Lexmark Rewards programme, which saw the office supplies manufacturer distributing free printer cartridges to customers who returned their empty cases.
